Serving Yazoo City, MS
Yazoo City is located on the banks of Yazoo River and was originally named Hannan's Bluff in 1824. It was then renamed to Manchester and then finally Yazoo City in 1841. The area can trace its earliest beginnings all the way back to the 1600s when the Yazoo tribe inhabited the area along the Yazoo River. Robert La Salle named the river "Rivere des Yazous" after the tribe.
During the Civil War, Yazoo City was home to a makeshift shipyard for confederates. The shipyard was destroyed by the Union after the Confederate lost New Orleans. The Confederates were able to recover the area, but was later burned down by Union forces in 1864. After the Civil War, the town was rebuilt, but Yellow Fever struck the area and slowed the rebuilding process. In 1904, another disaster struck in which a fire burned down much of central city. In 1927, the area was heavily impacted by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. The city was restored and now has an effective flood prevention system in place. As you can see, Yazoo City has had its fair share of disasters.
