Serving Clinton, MS
Clinton was originally named Mount Salus which means "Mountain of Health" and was founded in 1823. Just five years later, the town renamed itself after DeWitt Clinton who was an important part in the completion of the Erie Canal and was also a governor of New York. The first road leading to Clinton was the Natchez Trace and the Clinton-Vicksburg Railroad was the second-oldest in the entire state of Mississippi. Both the road and railroad lead to a more populated town.
Clinton was a pass-through for both Confederate and Union troops during the civil war. Both parties occupied Clinton on their way to the 1863 Battle of Vicksburg. During World War II, Clinton was home to a Prisoner of War camp which housed 3,000 German soldiers including 35 of the 40 German Generals captured throughout the war.
Clinton was at one point the smallest city to house a Fortune 500 Company as WorldCom was headquartered there in the mid-90's to the early 00's. Eventually, the company changed its name to MCI and moved to Virginia. Verizon currently occupies WorldCom's old headquarter site. Delphi was another large company that operated in Clinton. It was there from the 1970's to 2009.
Currently, the city operates under a Code Charter form of government that is divided into six different wards. There is one college in the area, Mississippi College. Clinton is home to the Mississippi Brilla, a professional soccer team. Some notable people from the area include: Lance Bass, Meredith Edwards, Shelly Fairchild, Alexander Nicholson, Daniel Curtis Lee, and Leon Seals.
