The full-size pickup segment is hotly contested this year with models like the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 going tire-to-tire in one of the closest races the automotive industry have ever seen. Both trucks are built for durability and strength to cover the needs of those who need a pickup the most. When it comes down to taking over the segment, however, the Ram 1500 could top the Ford F-150, if only by an inch.

Fuel Economy

The Ram 1500 is bound for glory when it comes to fuel economy. The standard 3.6-liter V6 engine earns up to an EPA-estimated 17 city/25 hwy mpg*. The massive 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine earns up to an EPA-estimated 15 city/22 hwy mpg*.

Official numbers aren't in for the 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine just yet, but tests have shown that the powertrain could earn up to an impressive 30 hwy mpg. The diesel engine earned an EPA-estimated 21 city/29 hwy mpg in 2016*.

The Ford F-150's 3.5-liter V6 engine earns an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 hwy mpg**, even when mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The available V8 engine earns an EPA-estimated 15 city/22 hwy mpg**.

The Ram 1500's performance tops out with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 385 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. That powertrain offers a maximum towing capacity of 10,700 pounds. Meanwhile, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine produces 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

By comparison, the Ford F-150's 5.0-liter V8 engine delivers 385 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque and offers a maximum towing capacity of 9,000 pounds. It should be noted the 2017 F-150 lacks any diesel engine designed for optimized performance.

The Ram 1500 offers plenty of seating options for up to four adults. The utility-driven design of this pickup means durable materials and storage spaces litter the cabin. Small touches, like elbow padding on the driver's door, make the Ram 1500 one of the most comfortable trucks on the market.

The Ford F-150 offers plenty of storage space and premium materials that are classy yet durable. The four-door SuperCrew models can fit up to four adults comfortably. Drivers will find there are plenty of USB ports for charging multiple devices simultaneously.

While the Ford F-150 is a capable truck, there's nothing quite like the new Ram 1500. Come test drive one today at Blackburn CDJR in Vicksburg, MS.
